ISMAR - Awards Selection Procedure

ISMAR Career Impact Award Selection Procedure

The selection process for the ISMAR Career Impact Award is overseen by a Selection Committee and consists of the following stages:

  1. Call for Nominations A public request for nominations is issued to the Steering Committee and relevant mailing lists. This typically occurs in early September (e.g., September 5, 2025), with a submission deadline approximately one week later (e.g., September 12).

  2. Committee Ranking (Round 1) An anonymous Selection Committee is convened. Members are required to submit a confidential, ranked list of candidates (e.g., their top ten choices). The committee evaluates the aggregate contribution of each nominee to the community, considering either a single seminal contribution or a sustained history of significant contributions.

  3. Initial Scoring The rankings submitted by the committee are converted into numerical scores (e.g., 10 points for the first preference, descending to 1 point for the tenth preference). These scores are summed to identify the leading candidates.

  4. Final Selection

The candidate with the highest cumulative score is selected as the recipient.

In the event of close scores among top candidates, a second round of voting may be initiated (e.g., ranking the top two finalists) to prevent a tie. In exceptional circumstances—contingent upon committee consensus—two awards may be conferred simultaneously (as occurred in 2024).

  1. Announcement and Award The recipient is notified confidentially and is invited to attend the conference to accept the award and deliver a brief acceptance speech (e.g., five minutes). The awardee is typically granted complimentary full conference registration for the year of the award.
